I was the first born child of a family of six, three girls and three boys. I was born and raised on my mum’s home island in the central part of Kiribati. At a year old, my sister was born so had to be raised by my paternal grandparents who were local protestant pastors. Both grandparents were from the southern part of Kiribati so I was brought up in a culture that values Christianity and strict on what local women should act and be like; social life was controlled, learning academic subjects and reading the bible, and helping out with women chores like cooking, cleaning and doing the family laundry were my everyday routines. I had my primary school years in the outer islands, high school in the capital Tarawa then studied for the teaching profession at this Kiribati Teachers’ College. I taught in the Primary schools for 10+ years, then shifted to this teacher training college to teach the vernacular language to pre-service teacher trainees and in-service teachers. I’ve retired but working still in the college on contract basis as the Accreditation Coordinator with part of my role in supporting the college to achieve accreditation from the Education Quality Assessment Programme in Fiji. Hobbies include reading, watching family movies and doing household work.
