As a teacher I believe that teaching and learning should be enjoyable with proper planning and executing it with positive feedbacks from the students.
As a teacher, I believe my job is to educate and facilitate, not to judge because we are teaching to make changes with minds. I believe teaching is a unique profession because it’s not only dealing mentally but physically, spiritually and emotional with people of different ethnic groups, backgrounds and trying to mold them into whatever subject or field you are in. Everyday when entering a classroom or to conduct a class, I always expect the students to learn something new during the class. Whether it be a reading class or just doing activities, I will always to find out what new things they have learnt in that class. That makes me relieved knowing that I am making progress, and this is especially to the ‘slow learners’. I am always eager to make changes and make the students enjoy being in class. With regards to the online global issue, I prefer doing a pre recorded lecture and setting up a online workshop which will cater for the tutorials and discussions, and for those who cannot make it for the workshops can always forward their queries before the workshops so that we can discuss it with the others and recording the class at the same time, which will help the absentees to check it out in their own time.
Wow. I really love your view as a primary school teacher. Children nowadays are very smart in using of the smart phones and with your strategy, it really works well and that I believe works best for the urban areas, I wonder how the rural teachers are coping?
Thank you Mr J Wakolo. This is very insightful and very helpful.
Hi,
As a teacher, I get to transform student’s lives in a meaningful manner, while being creative and innovative. Students need to use and apply their acquired knowledge in the most effective way possible. Some of the learning techniques in a synchronous environment employed is zoom lesson and presentations, chats via Viber groups. Asynchronous means by recorded video presentations, links to podcast and online quizzes.
Hello,
Very interesting. I also agree that students need to feel respected and treated equally and there needs to be a clear learning objective for all students.
As a teacher, I believe my job is to inspire, motivate, encourage and educate learners. Learners can be of any age and from any background. Teachers serve many roles within a school environment. Gone are the days when a teacher was merely seen as a classroom educator; someone who just teaches a core subject to a classroom full of children and then goes home for the day – job done. Teachers can work across a variety of subjects which they may bring to life with the assistance of modern and interactive technologies.
Out of my teaching, I would expect my students to be more bold and confident. They should be able to comfortably share and talk with me. Students should be able to do critical thinking and plan ahead for the future.
I would use both synchronous and asynchronous forms of learning for the students in my class. Some activities for active learning include role-playing, case studies, group projects, think-pair-share, peer teaching, debates, Just-in-Time Teaching, and short demonstrations followed by class discussion.

Agree with your thoughts…education in this era has changed…

True to the point. It is the students; that’s why we all teachers are in school. Hats off to all the teachers in the field who have taken up this challenge even in this pandemic …

Q1. The first question is probably the most difficult question to answer because frankly speaking we are expected and also over the years we become more designed to put on a lot of different caps - it is almost like an automatic response really. Our work does not start at 8am and finishes at 5pm. So basically, my answer to the first question is that my job is to do everything pertaining not just to the teaching and learning of my students but also their wellbeing in general.
Q2. I want my students to walk up to me or enter a virtual class and have the confidence to ask questions, to positively challenge me without any hesitations. I don’t want them to be scared to ask questions or raise their hand for further clarifications - which honestly is deeply rooted into our cultural context - students are not expected to ask questions or raise alternative arguments because they are shy, not confident enough as they have not had opportunities to do so. Speaking from my own experience as a student, I was never given such opportunities which led to me being a student who would never raise my hand even if I knew the correct answer - ofcourse this changed when I reached university and that is where I was finally encouraged to develop my critical thinking skills, to question and reflect.
Q3. For synchronous learning in an online environment, I think it is important to show students that you are there and they are not communicating with a machine - the human touch has to be present. I think it is also important to be honest with your students when you are unable to show them your faces for that human touch. Also, it is important to set some boundaries early on in the semester or term so that students are able to familiarize themselves with the expectations. I don’t think it is good to force them to turn on their webcams if they do not feel comfortable and if you have not set these expectations in the first place. For asynchronous learning environments, I think it is very important to provide students with the resources they need in a timely manner. I have seen some educators shy away from recording their lectures or classes and putting it on whatever e-learning platform they use. The reasons are mostly connected to the idea that “I own this material and I don’t want others to use it” or they are not confident enough with the process or “it is too much work”. However, practice makes nearly perfect and these are also excellent reflective opportunities for us as well to strengthen the teaching and learning process. I listen to some of the lectures I recorded last year and there are so many things this year that I will add or remove to keep students engaged. It’s been quite a learning curve - and I think I am ready to become a voice actress now
Insightful discussion, Dr Amanda. Loved your response and learning a lot.
Interesting point which is why an educator’s responsibility is also to keep up to date with current research, knowledge and overall be well informed.
I totally agree with that. Most students need to find what they are passionate at. Not all students are good in classroom. As a teacher we can really identify each student what they are good at in and out of classroom.
As a teacher my job is to plan, prepare and deliver classroom instruction that helps students learn. We need to prepare effective lesson, lesson plan, lesson notes , grade students work and offer feedback. Teachers need to mould each child holistically and encourage students to find what they are passionate at. Not all students are good in classroom. They are all unique and speacial that they need to find and words towards what they are passionate at ( talents and gifts).
The active learning techniques that I would prefer is Think pair share, peer assessment and one minute paper case base learning and to provide feedbacks through emails, zoom and viber to keep in touch with student. As for synchronous I will use zoom, viber to evaluate each lesson and use face to face classes since most student learn well through this and for asynchronous can upload notes and assignment through moodle platform.

My job as a teacher is to plan, prepare and deliver lessons inorder to create positive learning opportunities and to develop a child holistically under my care.
I’d like students to realize that learning can enable them to reach their full potentials.
For my online courses I’d love to send notes and activities through emails, viber and messenger. Followed by recorded videos and youtube links.
Later have zoom sessions where students can participate in discussion.
At the end of each lesson have online quizzes.
Various techniques will enable students with different ability groups to participate and learn.
Thank you for sharing your experience where students were not confident enough to ask questions (Cultural context). I agree that most of us went through this during our primary education mostly
I agree @makeretatubailagi201 that each and every child has gifted talent in them. As teachers we need to mould them.
As a teacher well I am not in the teacher field however I believe that teachers job is to treat students the same regardless of their capacity to learn each student should be taught the same. From the teaching that is provided to the students the students should be able to take in the teaching and gain the required knowledge. As per the learning techniques some synchronous learning techniques such as live one discussion and asynchronous learning techniques such as prerecorded lectures or videos
I would like my students to enjoy my teaching and also understand what is taught. As an added bonus,I would also appreciate the fact that they can teach someone else the exact same thing that was taught
My job as a teacher is to teach students lessons or concepts that is required and also guide student to be a better citizen in the future. I would like students to achieve the objectives of the lesson but some at least show me that they may partly understand so that I could help them.
I would like to use the virtual gallery walk because students are allowed to display their work so that others may view and ask questions and feedback also they are given enough time to view room to room and other set of students are given time to display their work.
Students learn in different environments so it is good to display there work so that they get the ownership of their work and also ascept negative feedback whicdh will help them.
