One digital literacy I am trying hard to come to terms with is databases, relational tables, SQL and coding and how this works together. This literacy would help me to create databases and set up programs like Omeka-S, which will enable me to create galleries and other means of making resources accessible to our patrons. lida101, #diglit, #omeka-s
Yes, I think there is a difference in the type of literacy one needs in social or formal contexts. Although the distinction is becoming more difficult to discern as these lines of communication merge. Firstly traditional settings often use proprietary software and software designed for internal intranets within an organisation. Use of social platforms require a literacy of the culture of the community that they are communicating within. Arguably one needs a greater degree of literacy of the use of these mediums in the workplace because the consequences of making mistakes i nthe work or educational environments is much greater than in the public, or social sphere. However one does have to be aware on public media too because employers will assess public online behaviour before employing a person lida101, LiDA101a1-2, #work-life
Greetings @fionabelle99, I am so glad I am not alone in this world of rapid digital environments. I may not rusted (as I had never heard of digital stuff) but surely am in trouble trying to master all the bit and pieces of this digital tehnological movement!
At least being able to browse the internet, able to search some (not all) basic learning items on the internet, and at least know some basic restrictions on the internet such as copyright. I thought that with these skills, I am able to master what is out there remotely, unfortunately, it seems that each day passes with more and more to learn in this remote environment, let alone getting good with the technologies of the internet.
Learning they said is unending. With so much to learn and so little time, success is seen to be so far away! One of the many digital literacies (skills?) I dream to acquire is the skill (literacy) to set up a digital platform where my blog and website are exchangeable, from your blog you can browse through your site pages, and vise vesa, from your website, you can work on you blogs.
One digital literacy that I learned last week was to bookmark. I feel there is a need for colleagues to have access to a database of resources in our University library. We have a resource site/repository known as OPAC -Online Public Access Catalogue, however, if we can create a shared drive for our section and link/tag bookmarks, this will be very helpful for those coming after us. There are two older staff members who will retire soon, however, we have no knowledge of whatever resources they used previously as there is no database/bookmarks/resource usage etc.
The world is truly moving toward dependence on technology āto streamline work, learning and our personal livesā For this reason, digital literacies are very important not only to me but to everyone else. Everyone, to be somebody, has to have the āability and confidence to navigate new technologies in order to succeed in lifeā, no other way round!
Just recently, I tried to recollect my literacy skill with bookmarking and tried to add my new book mark on Digital literacy, an interesting and challenging topic.
@AEnnis, Wow, congratulations on creating your database, Iām impressed.
As time continues to march forward, society as a whole is beginning to depend on technology. As we become more dependent technology, it is not sufficient to just have a set of digital skills, for example knowing how to convert a word document to a pdf file. But it is also imperative that we possess digital literacy. Digital literacy is how we use our skills to interact with the digital world, which includes retrieving, evaluating, and creating content.
@fabasse, Itās also important in the work force. My current job relies heavily on Microsoft Office. The military branch I was in was still using Windows 7 when I left, so the technology evolved in the civilian world, and I was still stuck in the 2010ās.
@mackiwg The learn-by-doing approach has been such an important method of learning and educating for myself over my early years of working and I believe in it so much. Early on in my career I was only volunteering to get some experiences but had been given the opportunity in building a online platformā:globe_with_meridians:. A socialā:busts_in_silhouette: platform for members and communities to have a safe space online to discuss in forumsā:mega: around social issues and policy reform but also have the capability to host coursesā:mortar_board:
around these different topics of discussion.
Without any sort of ICT experience or background with web developing or coding this was really a challenge. I would say the biggest skills that I think has translated whether in work, life or education is researchingš and evaluating or critical thinkingš¤, have the ability to really know what sources of resources online is credible or not. To learn and teach myself about all the different components that we had to add to make the platfrom work.
Thatās why I believe digital literacy is so important cause thereās a wealth of information and data now made readily available online and digital ready to be used.
Everyone just has to know and develop the skills needed to use them right and for good.
- I often use Google search to help with my schoolwork like āerosionsā and look for diagrams to help me understand. I choose the ones that make sense and look correct.
- I want to learn how to check if diagrams or maps are true and up to date. This will help me do better in Geography.
- Iām not sure, but I always use the internet to prepare for my lessons.
Hi, I feel the same! I also didnāt know about the term ādigital literacyā before. But because I always use Google to search for words I donāt understand, I found out what it means. Thatās how I learned. Thanks for sharingāyour post really connected with me.

I like this idea of learning by discovery. Itās good because it lets learners look for information that interests them and helps them learn better especially for students.
For me, digital literacies are essential for navigating online learning effectively. They help me critically evaluate sources, communicate ideas clearly, and use technology responsibly.
