Hello @jayantha. I think Health students and professionals would be benefited a lot from these activities. Best regards
#lida 103 solving real life problems project idea can be focused on **Recycling of plastic bottles. **We are practising this in our environment club and it is essential to preserve our environment. It can be step towards sustainable development and conservation of planet earth.
Hi @Kaurjyot26 - thanks for sharing.
Education for sustainable practice is an important facet of the potential for OER. That said, we live in a complex world as illustrated in this recent article: Plastic recycling is a mythâ: what really happens to your rubbish? published in the Gaurdian.
Learning Project
I would do a social media learning Project. First, I would divide my group in teams, trying to match more or less their interests with each one of the sustainable development goals.
- Each team would have to create a profile in Instagram and feed it for a month with a daily picture and caption:
- First week: Research to understand the goal and describe it using pictures, infographics and captions.
- Second week: Research to illustrate the global actions that have been taken in order to solve the problems related with the goal.
- Third week: Locate specific situations, locally, that are contributing to the problema and discuss posible solutions.
- Last week: Involve themselves in little, personal actions that contribute to the goal and document them.
- They might also could have the assignment of inviting others to follow their accounts.
- We would have a small congress-like activity at the end of the month, to present results.
Hello everyone,
Scanning the list of SDGs I believe in the 4th goalââQuality educationâ. Everything else depends on it. Right now what I could think of is to offer courses with quality reading to supplement it. Courses which are learner paced, and could pave the way for research options. They be aligned with contextual demands so that the learner gets an opportunity to widen their perspective, in respect of awareness about self and the surrounding. The research would be needed to be shared as an open resource to benefit everyone else. (#LiDA103)
Hello David,
Good selection the goal 7- Clean and affordable energy. To work on the provision of energy to the needy. To let the students prepare plans and schematics for creating such alternatives which are feasible actually is a commendable idea.
But what all is already getting done in this regard, which could qualify your project idea to stand apart? Please share your thoughts.
SDG 3 Good health and well-being. My project would be related to using art therapy especially during this pandemic and lockdown. Every month provide a theme and let participants produce a piece of work that can be showcased and shared with others.
It used to be normal to grow your own food but now its more of a hobby. The western world is facing the financial burden of increasing illness brought on by unhealthy lifestyle habits. Its been done before, but for the SDG of Good Health and Well-Being, I would love a project where people discovered how to grow and keep a good compost, how to use this to enrich soil and grow their own copious amounts of food, and the tweak - how technology can be used to establish communities sharing this locally grown food. There is someone I know who charges $5 for people in her community to come and pick a bag of what they want from her garden. What if we could establish community groups through online technology that shared knowledge and traded tips for growing, and that shared the excesses of food that they had grown at the same time. This sort of community share and education scheme could also help target the SDG of zero-hunger by promoting access to good nutrition.
I think an issue with the first idea is that people would question the need to learn another language within their own context. I love the intent though of learning about other cultures and developing a better understand of other ways of life. Perhaps there could be a âcultural exchangeâ board of ideas.
This seems like a great local project that can show people many aspects of the complex challege of recycling: https://preciousplastic.com/
Hopefully start building a workshop next year.
Great idea. It would be awesome if cities turned any open plots of lands into community gardens. Beautiful and delicious.
This is a great lesson idea for elementary schools. It is very encouraging to see students learning about the Sustainability Development Goals at such a young age.
Yes! I see it coming around a bit more now (at least among my friends). But I think a large part of that has been due to the pandemic.
I would pick #4 Quality Education. This truly relates to OER in many ways. For some students, purchasing texts books is not a financial option. Some schools also canât afford books for lower-income students. OER equalizes the playing field so that even students in less-wealthy locations still have access to a good education. This could solve a real-world problem because more students would have access to OER learning materials. One project that I could see that correlates with this goal, could be collecting old laptops and phones and refurbishing them for those who cannot afford the devices. This would give folks access to the OER materials digitally. Although this is kind of like the story âIf you Give a Pig a Pancake.â We want to give ALL students access to digital OER resources, but they need devices. Now not only do they need devices, but they also need to have Internet access - so this is a big issue to tackle. Thankfully there are some companies that offer free hotspots to students in need, but hopefully more step-up and help out!
In Papua New Guinea women and girls still face a lot of gender inequality in society as culturally we are dominated by men. Sustainable development goal 5 aims at achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The use of open Education Resources can really break that barrier for women and girls in my country where education is seen as an asset. However, not many women and girls will end up finishing their education. This can be due to teen pregnancies or young girls having to work low-income jobs to help cater to daily expenses. When they have access to free online courses such as the massive open online course, they can gain a free quality education and learn skills that they once could not afford to gain. For this to happen there needs to be aware and roll out programs on how women and young girls can access these resources. This will also need government intervention to create places where women and girls in our communities can have access to these learning facilities. And also, for incorporation of these learning resources into our education systems which can cut costs and create affordability to access quality education. Like it is best said when you educate a girl you educate a nation.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be achieved if education reaches every part of the world. This means that for these Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved everyone around the world must be educated. Therefore, the establishment of Open Education Resources (OER) is a good idea from Dr. David Wiley. For example, in an Operating Room (OR), there are three to four doctors who come together to make the procedure for a particular patient. Therefore, as well as education when people began to share information, they will be more to know that particular course or subject. Furthermore, these Open Education Resources cannot be accessed only in school but in any geographical location. Therefore, the OER course can be accessed by anyone or anybody around the world. This idea for Dr. David Wiley for the 5Rs and the establishment of Open Education Resource will help develop education around the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With respect to all the other sustainable development goals, I would prefer sustainable goal # 4 which advocate on Quality Education for all. In Papua New Guinea (PNG) literacy rate is very low as many did not have access to quality education or the cost of education is too high for the average income earner to afford school fees. Thus, many young people were left out of attending formal education. As a result, many were involved in illicit activities such as robbery, drugs, alcohol, and other illegal activities to keep them occupied. However, a few fortunate ones who are able to obtain good quality education at a higher cost are able to experience the luxury that this world offer. I believe Education is a fundamental tool that can make a dramatic revolution if it is made accessible to all, and when all people are educated then other sustainable goals could be achieved within no time. Therefore, the Open Education Resources (OER) coming into providing free learning materials and allowing people to learn openly anywhere at any time is a glimpse into achieving this UNDP goal # 4. If the OER can create application software that contains all resources for learning in a year and can be installed into smartphones to make it easily accessible to any average person and can be updated annually. As many young Papua New Guineans have access to smartphones. This will lead to achieving sustainable goal #4.
In adult learning education contexts, the Internet Information Literacy (IIL) process comprises not only of fundraising for its immediate use, but in particular conditions it also requires to âshed lightâ on a problematic condition using open educational resources (OER) that incorporate analogical thinking into professional problem solving. Based on studies, on experimental evidence found in specific literature, and on empirical data obtained from a case study, the model focuses on the awareness level that professional adults engaged in learning activities have in applying this thinking process. Their use of the web and of OER serves multiple purposes: for self-guided training, to plan educational activities, to solve problems or to express their creativity. Field experience conducted during three annual editions of teaching IIL in the specialisation course Social software and Web 2.0 for didactics and education highlighted the importance of setting up online, problem oriented activities which focus on analogical thinking and a creative use of OER. The course, conceived for adults working in different professional environments, analysed forum discussions on IIL and the results of a questionnaire which participants had filled out during the three annual editions of the course, from 2008 to 2010 (Ferranti. C, 2018).
Well the most important goal to consider in todayâs world is Sustainable Goal #4, which is Quality Education. With respect to the other 16 Sustainable Goals, why I chose Sustainable Goal #4 is because many people nowadays do not have access to proper education, due to highly demanded school fees. However, due to this, many people are on the streets doing illegal activities, and are contributing to the downfall of the country, especially teenage youths. Nonetheless, Education is a basic foundational instrument or tool that can change the world drastically without doubt. Therefore, with Open Education Resources (OER) coming into place, allowing people to learn freely online, at anywhere and anytime, this is simply a glance of accomplishing Sustainable Goal #4.
Out of all the goals, I choose Sustainable Development Goal 7- Affordable and Clean Energy. Since many people cannot afford to pay for electricity bills and majority of the population are using illegal power connections to their homes without being recognised by the power company. They face problems later on for doing illegal connections. This issues can be minimised by using solar panels in homes leads to great savings and also protect the environment. Using solar energy can help to reduce CO2 emission into the atmosphere as well.
