Technology and Emerging Pedagogies - Activity 1

Time: This activity should take you about 20 to 25 minutes to complete.

  1. In the discussion forum, share your understanding of the term “pedagogy”.
  2. In your practice, what are the main teaching and learning principles that underpin your approach to teaching? Share your answer in the discussion forum.

Pedagogy refer to approaches employed for content delivery. The approach is determined by the expected outcome of a lesson.

Pedalogy is the different ways a teacher uses to make learners understand the concept he is teaching.

1.Pedagogy refers to the theory and practice of education, particularly focusing on how knowledge and skills are imparted to learners. It encompasses the methods, strategies, and techniques used by educators to facilitate learning and development in students. Pedagogy includes not only the delivery of content but also the assessment of learning outcomes and the overall educational philosophy guiding these processes. It often involves understanding learners’ needs, designing appropriate instructional strategies, and creating supportive learning environments to optimize educational experiences.

2.Technology-Enhanced Learning: Integrating digital tools and resources, such as online platforms, multimedia presentations, and educational apps, to facilitate interactive and personalized learning experiences

  1. Share your understanding of the term “pedagogy”.
    • Pedagogy can be referring as a way individual used their approaches of teaching knowledge and skills in learning.
  2. In your practice, what are the main teaching and learning principles that underpin your approach to teaching?
    • Diagnostic tools- I used feedbacks to reflect back to our previous sessions
    • Availability of resources- making sure all the resources for each session must be all set.
    • Observing and supervising while leaners doing the group work or presentation.
    • Giving quick quiz and short test to see if the leaners do understand or not.

Well done for the thoughtful answers you have all given on the concept of pedagogy. You are all correct in defining pedagogy as the approach one uses in teaching. Examples of such approaches may include collaborative learning, reflective learning and inquiry-based learning. Often, they are underpinned by certain theories that explain how learning takes place. You may be familiar with learning theories like Cognitivism, Constructivism and Connectivism. It is important for teachers and learning designers to have clear understanding of theories that underpin their work.

Teaching and learning principles:
-group work
-giving feedback to pupils on their work/ results

  • clarifying instructions when giving work to learners
  • giving guidance to learners

pedagogy is the knowledge of handling students
student participation is very important in my classes, infact students can come up with ideas the teacher never thought of.

BlockquotePedagogy is often described as the act of teaching

Agreed with you @constancezilakama

Part of “pedagogy” can be the following

  1. Clarity: Teachers should communicate clearly and provide explicit instructions.
  2. Relevance: Teachers should make learning meaningful and connect it to students’ lives.
  3. Engagement: Teachers should actively involve students in the learning process.
  4. Assessment: Teachers should use various assessment methods to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

Understanding of Pedagogy

Pedagogy is the method and practice of teaching, especially as it relates to how students learn effectively in different contexts. In computer education, pedagogy involves not only delivering technical knowledge but also fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy skills that prepare students for the modern workforce.

Teaching and Learning Principles

In my teaching practice, I focus on:

  • Hands-on Learning: I believe students learn best by doing, so I incorporate practical computer labs and projects where students get to apply concepts directly.
  • Technology Integration: Using relevant software and online resources helps students stay updated and engaged.
  • Differentiated Instruction: Recognising that students come with varied skill levels, I adapt lessons to meet individual needs.
  • Collaborative Learning: Encouraging group projects and peer support builds communication and teamwork skills essential in IT fields.
  • Relevance to Fiji’s Context: I include examples and projects that relate to Fiji’s industries and community needs, making learning more meaningful.

Pedagogy is the approach and strategies used in teaching to help students acquire knowledge and practical skills. In Home Economics, pedagogy focuses on empowering students with life skills such as nutrition, sewing, budgeting, and family care, which are vital for personal and community wellbeing.

Teaching and Learning Principles

In my teaching, I emphasise:

  • Practical, Experiential Learning: Students learn best by engaging in real-life activities like cooking, sewing, or managing a household budget.
  • Cultural Relevance: I incorporate Fijian traditions and local resources to make lessons relevant and respectful of our community values.
  • Student-Centred Approach: Understanding students’ backgrounds and needs helps me tailor lessons that are inclusive and supportive.
  • Promoting Health and Wellbeing: Teaching good nutrition and hygiene practices contributes to students’ overall health, which is important in Fiji’s context.
  • Encouraging Responsibility and Independence: I help students develop skills to be self-reliant and confident in managing daily life challenges.
