You’re right. This gives room for availability of rubrics.
The two statements are taken from the view of the Learners. And both are very important. A learner needs to 'learn; and must be motivated to. If a learner is excited, willing, and want to learn then assessing (from the view of trainer) will be easier and more reliable.
Again for a Learner to be motivated to learn, must be give all the necessary support and feedback, and and only then, assessing (on the part of the trainer) will be again more reliable and frutitible.
The statements highlight two important considerations when thinking about assessment:
-
Learning is more important than assessing: This statement emphasizes that the primary goal of education is to promote student learning and growth. Assessments should not be seen as the end goal but as a means to measure and support learning. By prioritizing learning over assessment, educators can focus on creating meaningful learning experiences and fostering a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
-
Students need support and feedback: This statement recognizes the importance of providing support and feedback to students during the assessment process. Assessments should not be seen as a one-time evaluation, but rather as an ongoing opportunity for students to receive guidance and learn from their mistakes. By offering constructive feedback and support, educators can help students reflect on their progress, make improvements, and develop a growth mindset.
Both of these considerations challenge traditional views of assessment that focus solely on grades or rankings. Instead, they promote a more holistic and student-centered approach that values the learning process and supports students’ growth and development.
By embracing these considerations, educators can create a more supportive and engaging learning environment that encourages students to take ownership of their learning and promotes a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
I feel that assessing learners is beneficial in order to see whether learning really is taking place or happening in the classroom or any other setting. Secondly, I agree that support and feedback helps learners improve their learning and supporting their struggles to be able to reach their potential.
Learning and assessing go hand in hand, for assessment to take place learning must have taken place. Assessment is a tool that is used to test whether effective learning has taken place. Therefore both of them are important.
I agree that learners need support, this support takes place during the lesson, teachers need to ensure that they use flexible teaching methods to support learners. Immediate feedbck is alos important as it eradicates misconceptions.
HI,everyone
I am responding to the Discussion 1 and 2 questions and the topic of learning and assessment.
Discussion 1 - I make use of assessment for learning throughout the year as we are following a continuous assessment approach. I also make use of assessment of learning as we have summative tests at the end of each term. Assessment as learning is just as important as this ,for me, involves the learner more actively.
Discussion 2 : It has not really change. I just try to use different forms of assessment, but still do all 3.
Learning and assessment are both important. Learning is a lifelong process, but how will you know if the learner has gained any knowledge or skills if they are not being assessed ?
Thank you.
