Yes, indeed computer mediated communication is unique as it allows time and give space for participants to respond.

design adequate constructive instruction to enhance learners participation in the online learning platform.

I agree to the your statement madam and this point was also a refresher for me as we always talk about constructive activities in face to face learning however we need this in online learning as well.

Thank you

But network availability is something to think about.
Valid point raised madam, connectivity is plays a major role in Synchronous mode. I would like to share my experience with one online mode of learning; quality of presentations really drops when connectivity is not good and it also results in wasting time.

Thank you

What in your view makes computer-mediated communications unique from a teaching perspective, or is it just old wine in new bottles?

Computer-mediated communication is any human communication that occurs through the use of any electronic device. It is a unique form from teaching perspective since it:

  • engages individuals in communication with others regardless of time, location or other constraint to communication.

  • also allows a person to engage in communication with a minimal stress level (less self-conscious) about physical appearances.

  • How would you implement the learning activities in both synchronous and asynchronous environments?

Learning activities can be implemented in both synchronous and asynchronous environments by including:

Synchronous teaching -video conferencing, online webinars, chat-based online discussions and lectures.

Asynchronous teaching -facilitating the learners with pre-recorded lecture videos or lessons, online educational videos and instructions.

  • What strategies will you use to maintain your teaching presence throughout the course?

Teaching presence means creating the environment for the students that you are right there with them throughout the process of learning. As a facilitator to maintain teacher presence throughout may be:

-offer synchronous teaching sessions

-facilitate introductions and instructions clearly

-provide frequent and timely feedbacks and communication

-facilitate and model learning

Hello,
I totally agree with you and your ideas. Using the internet is a good way of teaching synchronous and asynchronous.

Yes computer uniqueness is that it adds audio visual aspect to teaching. E.g. when one is teaching a particular skill through video the teach can actual show all the intricate aspects within a short time

With the COVID situation as teachers we learnt how to use synchronous teaching through zoom. And note and worksheet was shared through Google classroom an example of asynchronous learning. Vinaka

Computer mediated communication is unique in any teaching perspective. It makes it accessible at any time and place. Also, communication at different places and time zones becomes convenient.

The learning activities that could be implemented in a synchronous environment providing activities/tutorials and have the discussion in the classroom. Whereas, asynchronous environment requires teachers interaction with the students at different timing. Making use of online learning especially moodle where the teacher uploads the relevant document and the students attempt them and submit at a given due date.

Strategies that could maintain teaching presence making yourself vocal, confident and also give clear and direct instructions.

Agreed. Nowadays we all are mostly relied on computers for communication and uploading of worksheets.

In the pandemic time we have analyzed that computers are highly useful and can be relied on as face to face teaching was hardly conducted.

  1. What in your view makes computer mediated communications unique from a teaching
perspective, or is it just new wine in new bottles?

Computer-mediated communications are unique in a number of ways from a teaching perspective especially when taking into account the traditional way of teaching, computer mediated communications have a lot to offer to make teaching and learning more interesting, fun and even more effective in some cases depending on the content taught. Firstly, computer mediated communications disregard the restrictions of time and place and a vast number of recipients of the information can be reached simultaneously. Also information can be archived for future referencing and for some students it is more comfortable communicating to their teachers or lecturers online rather communicating face to face. It is also important to note that vast forms of learning materials are also incorporated in the teaching and learning process in the computer mediated communications which aid student learning thus allowing them to have better understanding of concepts and topics taught.

  1. How would you implement the learning activities in both synchronous and asynchronous environments?
For those students who are able to meet at one designated time for classes, I would conduct my classes on Google Meet, Zoom or even use Viber but those who would like to access classes at their own convenient times, then I would upload recorded videos of classes on Viber Group, Messenger or even use Moodle Platform for online interaction.
  2. What strategies will you use to maintain your teaching presence throughout the course?
I will ensure that I am present throughout the course and I continuously maintain my interactions with the students either by way of giving mini-lectures, instructions, providing guidance on their posts or any queries that they might have. I also need to provide regular feedbacks to my students on the assignments or activities that they are supposed to be completing and submitting. I also need to actively engage in having dialogues with students and highlighting good work habits to them.

I definitely agree with you on the notion that while computer mediated communication has advantages such as overcoming barriers of geographical locations and allowing incorporation of visual aids in lessons to assist in learning, there are disadvantages such as accessibility of the gadgets and internet connectivity that limits online classes and some teachers find it convenient to have face to face classes. I also feel that in some instances, lack of knowledge on the teacher’s part on how to set up and engage in online classes also deters them from hosting online classes. However, having activities that are informative as well as fun definitely makes the teacher’s presence felt.

Hi Nilishma

I would like to just add on to what you have highlighted especially in providing the best form of education to our children in times of this crisis whereby access and equity are two main areas in education that we must never forget. Having synchronous teaching and learning will only allow those students who would be able to avail themselves at the particular scheduled time but what about those ones who would not be able to attend at that stipulated hour. We as teachers need to provide equal and fair treatment to all our students so their should be some provision for asynchronous teaching to allow for students to access lessons at their own convenient times.

Exactly true, when learning is fun, children will be engaged longer

I agree with you, face to face is still the best option when it comes to cost. However we shall go with the flow and try to adjust somehow

Hi Valevou - many thanks for sharing your views about cost and f-2-f modality.

I invite discussions on the cost of education and the different delivery modes noted here. What suits your context and why? [key words to consider: accessibility, balance, pragmatic, equity, quality, empathy, affordability, mass education, frugal technology, open educational resources, etc, etc]
