Why is Instructional Design important?
In Home Economics, ID is crucial to ensure students link theoretical knowledge to practical life skills such as cooking, nutrition, hygiene, and home management. With Fiji’s diverse cultural and economic background, ID helps tailor lessons that are meaningful and applicable in students’ home settings. It also promotes sustainable practices and healthy lifestyles, which are vital in our communities.

How often do I reflect on ID and learning theories?
I frequently reflect on learning theories, especially behaviorist and experiential learning methods. Practical tasks—like meal planning using local ingredients or sewing uniforms—require step-by-step instruction and reinforcement. I also use scaffolding techniques, where I gradually shift responsibility to the students. ID helps me plan practical lessons that are safe, culturally relevant, and aligned with national curriculum goals while accommodating diverse student abilities.

Why is Instructional Design important?
Instructional Design (ID) is essential because it helps structure lessons that align with learning goals, especially in a subject like Computer Studies where technology evolves rapidly. It ensures students are not only learning how to use digital tools but also developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills through real-life, task-based activities (e.g., creating websites, spreadsheets, or presentations). In Fiji, where digital literacy is still growing, well-designed instruction supports students in developing 21st-century skills for both local and global opportunities.

How often do I reflect on ID and learning theories?
I reflect on ID principles regularly—especially when introducing new software or programming concepts. I rely on constructivist and experiential learning theories, where students “learn by doing.” I design my lessons to include project-based learning, peer collaboration, and the integration of authentic assessments (like making a school website or a budgeting spreadsheet). This helps me ensure that lessons are student-centered and relevant to their environment and future careers.
