Role of Mathematics Education in women empoweerment

Women have been historically underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions worldwide. Consequently, the underrepresentation of women in STEM translates into a loss of a critical mass of talent, thoughts and ideas, which hinders developing countries from reaching their maximum development potential. This is because STEM subjects contribute towards Industrialization, environmental conservation, medical research, food management and improved agricultural production. Globally, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent), natural science, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent).
Digital learning is one of the ways in which women can be empowered in mathematics education. Connecting with young girls on social media platforms can contribute to enable their interest on their decisions in choosing their future careers. They can identify female role models in mathematical related fields quite early in their learning and hence connect with the digital world.
