AS4ODFL (PAC) Forms of assessment

Normally we used assessment of learning during classes to guide our students on what they should learn and how to do it, at the end of every session we expect students to achieve the learning objectives by practicing their understanding and do class activity

After every 3 weeks we conduct a assessment for learning to test student’s knowledge, understanding and skills on what we have taught them

I do try to incorporate the three types of learning styles as I see that students learn better when a variety of teaching and assessment styles are used. Most students can become bored and lack motivation when variety is lacking in my approach to assess their performance. I love to use short quizzes and tests on weekly basis to check on their understanding of the topic. At the same time the use of group/ peer activities/discussion is a very good because students are able to learn from each other. Summative unit tests are given at the end of a unit.

Yes, I do or have integrated all these forms of assessment in my teaching. By doing that it helps students to participate in all aspects of learning. Learning cannot takes place without the students. I make sure to asked questions on topics that were previously taught just to identify their knowledge and understanding about the topics and get feedback from them.

Actually, I have used all the three approach of assessment during my teaching. In terms of Assessment for learning, I used to prepare my lesson plans, part of the lesson plan is the activity where I assessed my students based on the learning outcomes of the lessons. That is where I measure their learning by understanding if they have learned the skills specified in each learning outcome. At the same time, while students were doing their activity and I also measure their level of thinking skills by ensuring that the activity were pitch according to cognitive domains like knowledge, understanding and application. This is one way where Assessment as learning is taking place when the activity in the lesson is designed according to blooms taxonomy ‘cognitive domains’ - knowledge, understanding and application. When it comes to assessment of learning, this is usually done when all the topics have been covered at the end of each term, I used to design a ‘Common Assessment Task’ to assess students’ learning on all learning outcomes which is important for reporting purposes to parents during PTAs and part of the schools’ assessment policy to achieve. Also, another example of assessment of learning is the national examinations where students sat every year to meet the national education standards and for selection and progression to another grade level.

As a teacher I try to implement assessment for learning in my teaching style and prefer to use this method as it allows me to monitor my students performance and make required changes as learning takes place. Secondly this method creates awareness in students as they know questions regarding topics would be asked and this way they prepare for the topic before hand and do not leave it for last minute

most of the time, I usually use assessment of learning because I getting used to explain the topic by myself and then I just give an activity to my student.

I mostly use assessments for learning and assessment as learning t make sure student understand clearly before moving to another topic.

In my experience, all three assessments are integrated. It is Assessment For Learning and AAL that I use most of the time in the classroom during the learning process. With these two assessments i have seen that students get motivated to learn and at the same time their performance also improve.

In my teaching I do apply both assessment for and assessment of learning, assessment for is very good but its time consuming, however thats the immediate way to assess students learning for a certain topic to know if students understood well the lesson or not. Therefore both assessments are really hepful.

All three are very important but learning will not be complete without using the assessment as learning

I just learnt about assessment as learning. Honestly, teaching-learning process will not be complete without doing assessment as learning. This is where students demonstrate skills acquired and competence.

Great! However, I still feel that learning is incomplete without the use of assessment as learning. Assessments of and for learning are domiciled in the cognitive and affective domains. Assessment as learning touches the psychomotor domain. Am I right?

In my teaching i implemented all three types of Assessment when Assessing the students. The reason for using all these three Assessment is because I believe that these three types of Assessment work together to achieve the criteria on the objective of a topic for the learners to achieve.

Yes, it is true that learning is incomplete without the use of assessment as learning. In teaching at this stage, student centered approach is a practice that must be encourage to be use in every day teaching. Through student centered approach, the assessment should be varied to students so that the students will learn effectively. To mean by assessment that should be varied to students, that is involved the integration of assessment of learning, assessment for learning and assessment as learning in the lessons. The integration of these assessment in the lesson will touch both the cognitive domains and psychomotor domain.

Effective facilitators (teachers) integrate AFL in their lessons as a natural part of what they do, choosing how much or how little to use the method. AFL can be adapted to suit the age and ability of the learners involved in the classrooms. It is to help the student progress in terms of their learning.

As part of my teaching here at the Distance Mode Learning, currently with the Distance Mode of Delivering Courses to students, we are basically using the Assessment for Learning.
Our Distance mode of delivery of hard copies to students has a complete course with each Unit covered and Assignments are submitted manually to use for marking at the end of each course completion.
Then they continue with the next Course (eg. English or Science etc…)
When they have understood the course they are able to continue learning new course.

I have used all three in my classrooms, sometimes as a single form and other times integrated two or all in a single class. One cannot use just one method always as individuals learn differently. Therefore, variety is essential. Otherwise class would be boring and students would lose interest.

Very true, the students are involved in their learning, the more they are likely to grasp the subject matter. I use the peer review method as well and have seen a lot of learning taking place.

Very interesting views by each respective teachers, each in accordance to their experiences.
As a student, my teachers would use normally pick assessment types from the three option

  1. Test/quizzes
  2. Experiments
  3. Research/presentation
There was only one who always had us interested in doing her work, because she used various types of assignments, where we had to creatively collaborate and present an art or do our own experiments and relate them to the concept.
That being said, now that I teach, I strive to adapt my favorite teacher’s methods, and assessments. Because I remember how those assessments motivated us to always be present, be involved and strive for good marks. I also try to improvise if it is beneficial for student learning, and I try to center the learning around the different learning styles that each student has. That is why I look at assessments as learning, and for learning. Because when students are doing their assessment, it should teach them something step by step.

I do assessment for learning and assessment as learning to keep students on track with the expected learning outcomes while teaching.
