Keeping the curriculum relevant

In Fiji I use the syllabi provided by Ministry of Education to develop my Learning Teaching Program (LTP). The LTP is used to write workbook (weekly plan ). The workbook is used to deliver daily lessons. Students are given simplified notes on the concepts . Experiments are carried out in science subjects and research work is being done to enhance learning. Individual Work Plan (IWP ),is also prepared. IWP is the work that teacher will do for the year. The IWP is prepared in line with school annual plan.
As an educator or teacher , I use child centered teaching approach. Media is used in teaching and learning. Career education is incorporated with various subjects.
The learning environment is prepared so that it is attractive and motivates learners.
Innovative skills are necessary at times due to challenges such as slow learners and discipline issues.

As an educator/teacher, I highly suggest that students are engaged in an interactive mode of learning. It is normal for students to be easily got bored in an class and have tendencies to procrastinate if the environment is not conducive for them to hook in the class.

In order for learners to master 21st Century skills, students needs to be exposed in globalized and diversified curriculum that is aligned in technology-based learning. It is important specially nowadays that e-commerce trendy, students must be be passionate in learning away from the brick and mortar or traditional mode of learning.

I am keen in the following method - The learner is at the center of the teaching-learning process. Thus, the curriculum uses pedagogical approaches that are constructivist, inquiry-based, reflective, collaborative, differentiated, appropriate, relevant, and integrative

As an educator and teacher, I believe students in class should have child-centered learning whereby students are encouraged to be involved in learning and teachers are there to guide and facilitate in whatever they need.

Some of the strategies that I can use to ensure that my learners master 21st-century skills are:

  1. Learning Skills: Encourage students to be critical thinkers, be creative, be able to work in collaboration, and have the skills to communicate. With this skills , students will be able to learn faster and have the courage to master learning.

  2. Literacy Skills:
    Information Literacy
Being literate means having access to all information for learning. Students should have as much information as needed for learning.
    Media literacy
Able to access information, analyze it, evaluate it, and create new information using media.
    *Technology literacy. *
students have the ability to work independently and with others, which they are encouraged to learn through the use of technology tools to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create, and communicate information.

  3. Develop Life Skills*
Students have the ability to adaptive and for positive behaviors that enable them to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life.

As an Educator, Before operationalize curriculum given by Fiji National Curriculum Framework, I need to understand and familiarize myself with the curriculum first. Develop and contextualize Long Term Plan, lesson plans, notes and use of appropriate teaching resources for easy understand and to make learning more meaningful to my targeted audience. Formal and informal assessment will be conducted to get clear ideas on student’s level of understanding on a particular concept. Since we are living in a technological Era, integration of ICT into teaching and learning is a must. Intervention plans will be carried out to assist students who need extra assistance.

The strategy that I will use as an educator to make sure my learners master 21st century skills are:

• Let your students lead the learning.
Learning happens best in conditions where students feel enabled to learn. Effective educators are more similar to mediators, offering motivation and directing children to discover for themselves. Offer students the chance to be self-students, which ensures long lasting learning.

• Create a Inquiry based classroom environment
If students are to lead the way to learning, they need to be asking questions and also find ways to answer them. This concept will help a child to be critical thinkers. A KWL chart can guide students towards true self motivated learning.

• Peer Teaching
For students, peer learning can lead to improved attitudes and a more personalized, engaging, and collaborative learning experience, all of which can lead to higher achievement. For peer teachers, the experience can deepen their understanding of the subject and impart confidence.

• Integration of ICT into teaching and learning
ICT in education improves engagement and knowledge retention. When ICT is integrated into lessons students become more engaged in their work. This is because technology provides different opportunities to make learning more fun and enjoyable in terms of teaching the same concept in different ways.

As an educator in Fiji, I place a strong emphasis on ensuring that my learners master the 21st-century skills highlighted in Figure 1 of the curriculum. To achieve this, I use several strategies:

  1. Project-Based Learning (PBL): I design learning experiences that require students to work on real-world projects, fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  2. Critical Thinking Activities: I encourage students to question, analyze, and evaluate information, enabling them to make informed decisions and solve complex problems.
  3. Technology Integration: I incorporate technology into my lessons to enhance information, media, and technology skills. This includes teaching them how to use digital tools for research, communication, and presentations.
  4. Collaborative Learning: I promote group activities that develop teamwork and communication skills, allowing students to learn from one another.
  5. Creativity and Innovation: I provide opportunities for students to think creatively, encouraging them to explore new solutions and ideas.
  6. Media Literacy: I teach students how to critically assess media sources, helping them become discerning consumers of information.
  7. Adaptability and Resilience: I create an environment that encourages risk-taking and adaptability, helping students cope with change and challenges.
  8. Global Awareness: I incorporate global issues and perspectives into my teaching, promoting an understanding of the interconnected world.
  9. Communication Skills: I emphasize effective verbal and written communication, as it’s a fundamental skill in the 21st century.
  10. Problem-Based Learning (PBL): I expose students to authentic, complex problems, helping them develop skills to tackle real-life challenges.
  11. Information Literacy: I teach students how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively, ensuring they can navigate the vast amount of data available today.
  12. Life and Career Skills: I integrate lessons on leadership, teamwork, adaptability, and responsibility, preparing students for success beyond the classroom.
  13. Inquiry-Based Learning: I encourage curiosity and inquiry, enabling students to drive their learning by asking questions and seeking answers.
  14. Feedback and Reflection: I provide regular feedback and encourage students to reflect on their learning and growth.
  15. Cross-Curricular Teaching: I connect various subjects to demonstrate the interrelatedness of knowledge, promoting a holistic understanding of the world.

By combining these strategies, I aim to equip my learners with the necessary 21st-century skills to thrive in an ever-changing world and contribute positively to their communities and beyond

I agree with the above point that our classroom should be child centred because we as teachers we need to encourage and motivate our children in the classroom. Students should be given the opportunity to take part in the different activities and present it to their class so that they build confident.

As a educator / teacher, I operationalize the Fiji’s curriculum by understanding the Curriculum Framework. I familiarize myself with curriculum and plan my lessons aligned to the syllabi and CLO’s . Develop the Learning and teaching programme. Which I use to plan my daily lesson.

The strategies I use to ensure that my learners master the 21st century skills are as follows:

Child-centered learning - it allows students to do hands on activities and the teachers acts as a facilitator. It allows students to develop self confidence and takes the students to the next level understanding.

Inquiry Based Learning - students are given opportunities to ask question and explore or do their own finding about the concepts or subject.

Constructivist learning- it allow students to construct their own knowledge by doing researching. In this students learn from their experiences and through social interaction. It removes the fear of communication from children.

Critical Thinking Activity- It allows students to do research and find the answers, analyze and evaluate and find the solution or come up with the conclusion.

As an educator, I implement the curriculum in the following ways:
i. Preparing the annual Learning and teaching plan (LTP) in alignment with the aims and objectives, time frames, outlined in the syllabi and the National Curriculum Framework. The assessment plan and type of assessment (be it formative or summative), with accompanying activities is also included in this.
ii. From the LTP, weekly plans (workbook) are then prepared one week in advance. This plan maps out the learning objectives /outcomes that should be achieved, the topic and duration for the lesson, the development, class activities, strategies and the teaching aids that will be used in each lesson.
iii. From the weekly plans, lesson plans are prepared that provides minute details of each lesson such as the questions that will be asked and the questioning techniques that will be used. Additionally, the activities that will be used and how it will be implemented.
iv. Implementation and Monitoring-the lessons are implemented through varying techniques most of which involves the use of ICTs and other relevant technologies to cater for the 21st century learning needs made possible by the fact that every classroom in the school, including the specialist rooms, are equipped with e-learning facilities and internet connection.
the lessons are monitored by the HODs and HOSs through regular walk-in lesson observations after which SWOT analysis is carried out.
v. Assessments - are mapped to the Learning objectives/outcomes outlined in the syllabi.
vi. Review is carried out at the end of the assessment and remedial actions are taken.

  1. The strategies used to ensure my learners master 21st Century skills highlighted in Figure 1 are as follows:
    -at the school level, includes:
    i. having a TEST week to highlight the importance and urgency in acquiring technology and employment skills training whilst emphasising on sustainable development and progress by going green. Activities for this week included competitions for best, innovative IT display/model, entrepreneurship through buying and selling of handmade /home made products and food.
ii. Having a weekly “Battle of the Minds” competition on a wide variety of topics which includes technology and entertainment.
iii. Poster Competitions on a wide range of themes that are current to our society including ethics, social and environmental issues.
iv. participation of students in national events such as the Fiji Fashion Week, where a few students showcased their designs.
    v. debates on pros and cons of pressing issues.
vi. implementation of policies that pertain to 21st century themes such as an all-inclusive school, combating climate change through practice and monitoring of the 5R’s.

-at the classroom level:
i. providing challenging activities to encourage thinking both within and outside the box. An example of such an activity is the Common Assessment for Year 12 IT students whereby they were tasked to create an Electricity Bill calculator using an IDE such as the vb.net framework and to write a report on it.

ii. student-centered learning such as:
*use of ICTs and e-learning facilities
*power point presentations
*roleplays/skids
*peer mentoring
*group work/presentations
*critical thinking activities

I operationalize Fiji’s Curriculum by understanding the NCF. I farmiliarise myself with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Education.

  1. Lesson plans are developed from the Learning and Teaching Program that is align with syllabi and CLO.

  2. Child centered learning. We as an educator do not have to spoon feed our students all the time. We give them chances to learn and practice more.

  3. Intergration of Lessons. Integrate lessons to make it interesting for students.

  4. Inquiry Based Learning. Give students worksheets for them to work on and find answers and solutions through research and interviews.

Studies at University to become a teachers really helps me a lot because i can understand what the teacher needs to know and what t teach on the students. as a student, i have been identified that the curriculum framework which given by the The Ministry of Education simplified that the plan and the organized of the lesson plans has a vary significant to an educator to know. scores of assessment which given by the curriculum identify the place that an educator need to look after their students.

strategies been used:
most of all, more teacher used lesson planning to before they conduct their class- these strategies breaks down the work for an educator and also make their work easer.

Strategies remain to be the most vital tools where we use to transform the curriculum to the learners. However, it should be noted that talking about the 21st Century skills means we are using technological methods in our teaching. In my case in Tonga and specifically where I teach, very little can be seen. I really wish that I can implement something like it.

The Strategies that I will be used as an educator to ensure my learners master 21st century highlighted in Figure. 1 are:
Cooperative Learning - Working together with my students and shared knowledge with them.

Hands on Activity - so that they can familiarize with the lesson and put them into actions.

Online learning- students must adapt into the use of technological materials due to the advanced learning of digital literacy in this century. For example, such as presentations using power point.

Very true children do not like too much of writing in class however the children’s books are checked for notes. Rural areas face problems due to lack of resources but urban schools just easily print notes.
