Assessment in learning

  1. Assessment
  • Is testing how much and what the learner has learnt
  1. When to Assess
-end of topic or learning outcome
    -end of sub-strand
    -end of term or year
  • ongoing different types of assessment

Why Assess
-gives feedback on what was learnt
-Examine and analyze the level of studies required

  • Improve on learning

The methodical process of collecting, analyzing, and using data to better understand students, inform instructional choices, and enhance learning outcomes is known as assessment.
The types of assessment I used is both summative and formative. For example, topic test, strand quizzes are conducted at the end of every topic and strand (formative). Summative assessments are conducted in the form of Term End Exams.

There are 3 different type of assessment to be test by student
1.Diagnostic
2. Formative
3.Sumative
all of these three are important in order to know where are the certain area your teaching should cover, the ongoing assessments are understood by the the student or not and finally the summative to see your feedback on that certain topic you had taught.

Assessment can be formative or summative, as it it designed to be an asssessment for learning and assessment of learning.
Leaners must be assessed based on after each activity being carried out. This will assist the educator to make timely decisions in improving his/ her strategies.
Learners are assessed to gauge their understadning of the concept

Assessment is the process of evaluating a learner’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in a particular subject or course. It can take the form of tests, quizzes, projects, presentations, or other methods to measure a learner’s understanding and progress.

In my course, I assess my learners at various stages throughout the learning process. I believe that assessment should be ongoing and not just limited to a final exam or project. I assess my learners at the beginning of the course to gauge their prior knowledge and understanding of the subject. This helps me tailor my teaching to meet their needs and ensure that they are adequately prepared for the material ahead.

I also assess my learners during the course to track their progress and identify any areas where they may be struggling. This allows me to provide additional support and guidance as needed. Finally, I assess my learners at the end of the course to measure their overall understanding and mastery of the subject.

I assess my learners for several reasons. Firstly, assessment helps me understand how well my learners are grasping the material and where they may need additional support. It also provides valuable feedback for both the learners and myself, allowing us to identify areas for improvement. Additionally, assessment helps to motivate learners and hold them accountable for their learning. Overall, assessment is a crucial part of the learning process and helps ensure that my learners are achieving their educational goals.

Assessment occurs at various stages of a course. formative assessment occurs during the learning process and summative assessment occurs at the end of a course or unit. Learners to determine how well they are meeting specific learning objectives and standards, to provide feedback for improvement, to guide instructional decisions, and to evaluate the overall effectiveness of teaching and curriculum. Assessments help gauge progress, identify learning gaps, and ensure that educational objectives are met.

Assessment in a nutshell refers to the process of collecting and evaluating information about a learner’s performance, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

For my teaching subject formative assessments takes place through practicals, throughput the course where applicable. Summative assessments is carried out usually at the end of a unit and atthe end of the term.

Bula,

  1. Assessment is given during a lesson or end of the learning period to gauge students understanding on a concept taught by the teacher. Example, quiz, observations, standard examination etc.
  2. I assess my learners after the end of a lesson by asking questions or giving a test at the end of a lesson to assess learners understanding, gauge pedagogy taught and to re-strategize if marks from the test are low.

Assessment in education refers to the process of gathering information and evaluating learners’ knowledge, skills, abilities, and progress within a course or educational program. It involves measuring various aspects of learning to understand what students have learned, how well they have learned it, and how their learning can be improved.

Assessment occurs at different stages within a course:

  1. Formative Assessment:
  • Occurs during the learning process and provides ongoing feedback to both learners and instructors. It helps identify strengths and weaknesses, guides instruction, and supports students in their learning journey. Formative assessments include quizzes, discussions, peer reviews, and homework assignments.
  1. Summative Assessment:
  • Takes place at the end of a learning period to evaluate the overall learning outcomes. It typically determines a learner’s level of achievement or mastery of the content. Examples include final exams, projects, presentations, or standardized tests.
  1. Diagnostic Assessment:
  • Conducted at the beginning of a course or unit to assess students’ prior knowledge, skills, and understanding. It helps instructors tailor their teaching methods and content to meet the needs of individual learners.
  1. Continuous Assessment:
  • Involves assessing learners at regular intervals throughout the course to track progress and provide ongoing feedback. It includes quizzes, assignments, projects, and discussions conducted regularly.

Assessment serves multiple purposes:

  1. To Inform Teaching and Learning: Assessment results help instructors understand what students have learned and what areas need further focus or clarification. This guides instructional strategies and curriculum development.
  2. To Provide Feedback: Assessment offers feedback to students, highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement. This feedback helps them gauge their progress and take steps to enhance their learning.
  3. To Monitor Progress: Assessments help track students’ progress over time, enabling educators to intervene and provide additional support if needed.
  4. To Measure Achievement: Summative assessments determine the level of achievement or mastery of specific learning objectives or standards at the end of a course or unit.
  5. To Promote Accountability: Assessments also serve as a means of accountability for both learners and educators, ensuring that learning goals are met and educational standards are maintained.

Effective assessment practices are essential for creating a supportive learning environment that fosters growth, identifies learning gaps, and ensures that educational goals are being met. Integrating a variety of assessment methods at different stages of a course allows for a comprehensive understanding of student learning and supports their continuous improvement.

  1. Assessment refers to deliberate efforts to check learners understanding during teaching processes and at the end of the course in form of tests, quizzes, assignments, and examinations.
  2. Assessment can done during learning processes and this is known as formative assessment. Also, assessment is done at the end of learning process and this is called summative assessment. The reason for formative assessment is check learners understanding and correct them or adjust strategy while summative assessment aims to evaluate achievement of learning goals without efforts to correct learners or adjustment of strategy.
