Youths in Fiji would need to develop life skills. Skills that would ensure that youths are employed. These skills could include

plumbing
carpentry and joinery
tile laying
clothing and textile skills
agricultural skills
coaching skills
baking skills

Schools could assist by ensuring that these skills are offered as options and opportunities for students from Year 11. Reintroduce TVET courses into schools or open up TVET centres around the country that is accessible for the districts. The TVET courses should at least offer recognised Trade Certificates for Youths upon successfully completing the course.

  2. Our curriculum should prepare students with skills needed in the job market. In Fiji, there is a gap between what the labour market needs and what an individual possesses. Hence unemployment or under performance at work. Courses offered must be designed to meet the requirements of the labour market and what the industry needs. There a need for TVET to include upskilling or reskilling courses especially digital upskilling in the industrial, agricultural and service sectors as there is a rise in use of technology in industrial processes and the labour force needs are changing.

  1. I can say that the youths in my country do have a lot of needs especially in terms of getting them to do something for themselves or for their future. I am thinking a long the lines of having the mentality to create jobs for themselves but not to be employed by another person. They can go through training where they will be able to have the skills to create their own businesses, such as owning shops and so on.
  2. Open schooling can make more awareness in regards to being self-sufficient, developing the skills to create one’s own employment and become and employer than an employee.

  1. In Fiji’s rural settings most youths especially males (and a few females) are not going to be too eager to move to the urban centers to pursue advanced academic studies. Most are eager to use their abundant natural resources to make a living. They prefer to stay in familiar surroundings rather than make the journey to a life of hardship (as they say) and as a rural educator I can wholly agree with them.
  2. What these students need are TVET training in Agriculture, Industrial Arts, Mechanical Engineering, Digital/Computer Education, and Enterprise Education where they can start making a living through farming, small cottage industries like making food parcels, sewing, building houses in the villages, fixing small engines, etc., to generate income. There will be less unemployed youth from rural communities in our urban centers.
