Purposes of assessment

Assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety in learners than assessment for learning. This is because assessment of learning is typically used to measure student achievement at the end of a unit or course, and it often has high stakes attached to it (e.g., grades, placement decisions). Assessment for learning, on the other hand, is used to monitor student progress throughout a unit or course, and it is typically used to provide feedback and inform instruction.

  • In my computer studies lessons and courses, I use a variety of assessment methods, including:
    • Formative assessments: These are low-stakes assessments that I use to monitor student progress throughout a lesson or unit. Examples of formative assessments include quizzes, homework assignments, and class discussions.
    • Summative assessments: These are high-stakes assessments that I use to measure student achievement at the end of a unit or course. Examples of summative assessments include tests, projects, and presentations.

I see the following strengths and weaknesses in my approach to assessment:

Strengths:

  • I use a variety of assessment methods to engage all learners and to assess different types of learning.
  • I provide timely and specific feedback to learners on their work.
  • I use assessment data to inform my instruction and to help learners track their progress.

Weaknesses:

  • I sometimes struggle to balance the need for formative and summative assessments.
  • I am not always able to provide as much feedback to learners as I would like.
  • I sometimes find it difficult to assess higher-order thinking skills.

To avoid or minimize bad feelings about assessment from developing in my learners, I can:

  • Explain the purpose of assessment to learners. Learners need to understand that assessment is used to help them learn, not just to punish them.
  • Provide learners with opportunities to practice for assessments. This will help them to feel more confident and less anxious on the day of the assessment.
  • Use a variety of assessment methods. This will help to reduce the pressure on learners and to give them different ways to demonstrate their learning.
  • Provide timely and specific feedback to learners on their work. This will help learners to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and it will motivate them to improve.
  • Create a positive and supportive learning environment. Learners should feel comfortable asking for help and making mistakes.
  • I can also discuss with my colleagues how we can work together to create a more assessment-friendly environment for our learners. We can share ideas and strategies, and we can support each other in implementing new assessment practices.

Here are some specific things that we can do as colleagues to avoid or minimize bad feelings about assessment from developing in our learners:

  • Communicate with each other about our assessment plans. This will help us to ensure that learners are not being overloaded with assessments.
  • Collaborate on assessments. This can help us to develop more comprehensive and engaging assessments.
  • Share assessment resources with each other. This can save us time and effort, and it can help us to ensure that our assessments are of high quality.
  • Provide each other with feedback on our assessments. This can help us to improve our assessment practices over time.
  • Support each other in implementing new assessment practices. This can be done through professional development workshops or one-on-one mentoring.

By working together, we can create a more assessment-friendly environment for our learners. This will help them to feel less anxious and more motivated to learn.

According to the Video it is evident that Assessment OF Learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety to learners as requires teachers to make judgements about student learning and to communicate to parents, other teachers. This judgement by teachers make the students behave with anxiety as they will be monitored.

Assessment is a crucial aspect of education, helping to gauge students’ understanding and progress. Here are some general strengths and weaknesses of common assessment methods:

Main Strengths of Assessment:

  1. Measuring Learning: Assessments help educators gauge how well students have grasped the material and whether they are meeting the learning objectives.
  2. Feedback:Assessments can provide valuable feedback to both students and teachers. Students can identify their strengths and weaknesses, and teachers can adjust their

Assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety to learners as teachers to make judgment to students learning.Assement of learning use to monitor their learning experience and measure their experience through their course or unit.
Weaknesses cause lack of experience and not being passed and improve more through its assessment.

  1. Assessment of learning cause panic and anxiety in my learners.
  2. Strengths
children’s performance can be measured, and we can find out how much children learn in the class.
  3. weaknesses
children’s drop out because children feel low when they fail.
  1. The assessment of learning will cause panic because students are not assessed to build them up but rather for identifying their positions in the group.
2.For me the main strength is that I always look for the weak areas and start doing remedial building from where they are.
  2. The main weakness is students think their are failures. This could be minimized by positive reinformcement and peer to peer teaching.
  1. Assessment of Learning creates anxiety and panic amongst students.
  2. There should be a balance between formative and summative assessments, providing ongoing feedback and measuring overall achievements of students. However, weakness lies on the overemphasis of grades only.

3.to minimize the negative feeling of exams, educators should Encourage self-assessment, peer feedback, and a supportive learning environment for all students.

  1. I believe that Assessment of Learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety to the learner.

  2. Strengths:

  • Providing clear expectations: I strive to communicate the assessment criteria and expectations clearly to learners. This helps them understand what is required and reduces confusion.

  • Offering constructive feedback: I aim to provide timely and constructive feedback to learners. Feedback helps them understand their strengths and areas for improvement, supporting their learning progress.

  • Using a variety of assessment methods: I incorporate various assessment methods to cater to different learning styles and preferences. This allows learners to showcase their understanding and skills in different ways.

Weaknesses:

  • . Limited formative assessment opportunities: If I focus too heavily on summative assessments, learners may not have enough opportunities for ongoing feedback and reflection throughout the learning process.
  • Overemphasis on grades: If grades are the primary focus of assessments, it can create an environment where learners become overly fixated on the end result rather than the learning process itself.

Assessment of Learning may send negative vibes to the child as most of this assessment is teacher centred.
Currently exams are the only tool that is used to measure the child’s performance. Without exams, the teacher is not able to know how the child might be doing and this becomes an important assessment tool for most of the teachers.

Assessment of learning will cause more panic and anxiety in the learners. I assess my students using formative assessment which is ongoing and a variety of methods to assess in order to cater for the different needs of students. For example, use of oral questions, practical on computer, quizzes and so forth. n this way those students who are weak intellectually continue to take interest in the subject and learn at the same time. The strengths are that this method ensures all the students are involved in the learning process irrespective of their learning capabilities.
On the I also use summative assessment which is given at the end of a topic or term. This is usually a written paper so those students who are facing literacy issues are disadvantaged. However, summative assessments cannot be put aside because at the end of the day when students are assessed externally, they sit for a written paper. The process of learning do takes place with the variety of formative assessments and assessment for learning but the final assessments do not take into account the child’s cultural background, language, and socioeconomic status.

  1. Assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety in learners.

  2. The main strengths includes motivating students to study, finding learning gaps, improving teaching strategies, providing insights and controlling the learning environment. The weaknesses can be causing stress, and not always the perfect gauge for students.

  3. Avoid bad feelings about assessment of learning, the use of rubics and designing clear, effective questions from lessons can be implemented.

1.The assessment most likely to cause panic and anxiety in my learners according to the video clip would be assessment “OF” learning. As much as it is an essential part of learning it has its downside as these assessments can create stress and emotional damage due to the fear of failing. Insecurities and discrimination may arise for the fact that they will be judged in comparison to their peers.

  1. The main strength of the way I implement my assessments is keeping the balance amongst the assessments and incorporating it to measure their abilities and daily feedback on their weaknesses with fair transparent grading criteria. Main weakness would be time management as detailed and constructive grading and feedback can be very time consuming in big classes.

  2. Ensure no one gets left behind, everyone to be on the same level and no gap for discriminations.

  1. According to the video clip, which of the two forms of assessment is more likely to cause panic and anxiety in your learners?

Assessment of Learning because it is accompanied by a number or letter grade, compares one student’s achievement with standards, results can be communicated to the student and parents and it occurs at the end of the learning unit.

  1. Think about how you assess in your lessons and courses. What do you see as the main strengths and the main weaknesses of how you assess? Post your answer in the discussion forum. Also read what your peers have posted.

Strengths/Weakness

Teachers are great problem solvers and it makes them effective teachers. Teachers with good subject knowledge and good communication skills are too quick to solve the problem for students, without allowing any opportunity for our students to learn and grow. Sometimes we tend to compare students. We know that no one is perfect, but there are always teachers who seem to compare students as we grade them. Mistakes are normal but we are all afraid to make mistakes. We want students to be perfect.

According to the video, assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic in learners.
Assessing in my lessons and courses likely involves a mix of assessment methods. Here are some strengths and weaknesses I encounter in my assessment approach:
Short quiz is the main assessment I use everyday in class.
Main strength

  1. Learners look forward of the result. This shows that learning takes place.
  2. Motivate students, let them decide what to do next.
  3. Assess learners anytime during class, before or at the end of each lesson.
  4. Provide data for learners and facilitators for improving learning
    Main weakness
  5. Create learners’ fear, anxiety, stress.
  6. Learners develop bad feelings about themselves, eg. not smart.
  7. Not carefully designed.
  8. Time consuming, reduce the lesson session
To avoid or minimize bad feelings of my students these are the strategies I had used
  9. Keep telling them that the assessment is not a final score, it is for them to see how far they had gone with their studies and to find ways to improve.
  10. Practicing and revising similar questions before the final one to be recorded

Assessment of learning as it can disheartened a student when he or she receives her results and did not perform well.
The strength in assessment is that it gives us an idea and picture of students learning while the weaknesses is it gives emotional impact on students as some of them not willing to face or take failures in their results.

Assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety because it may be a final grade and may heighten stress, and anxiety. I can see that students are more interested in assessment for learning during the weekly lessons as they are more willing to participate well in group assessment for a particular concept that had been taught and assessed for the duration of the lessons. The main weakness is that the assessment is not aligned with the achievement indicators in the syllabi where I should pick the pool of questions from which supported the assessment for learning that has been done. I should also foster a positive and supportive classroom culture where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help and emphasize that mistakes are part of the learning process and provide opportunities for learning from them. I should also use a variety of assessment methods, such as projects, presentations, and collaborative activities, to accommodate diverse learning styles. This approach helps students showcase their understanding in ways that align with their strengths.

Assessment of learning often involves standardized tests, final projects, or comprehensive exams that aim to measure overall achievement of learners. According to the video, the assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety amongst learners.

The courses and lessons which I teach incorporate both type of assessments.

Each assessment has advantages of its own. When it comes to making important decisions like graduation or promotion, assessment of learning offers a moment in time view of students’ accomplishments. On the other hand, it could not always offer prompt feedback that can be applied to enhance present learning. On the other hand, assessment for learning provides insightful information on students’ comprehension at every stage of the process and enables teachers to modify their lessons to better meet the needs of their learners.

In summary, assessment for learning stresses the use of assessment as a tool to encourage continuous learning and progress, whereas assessment of learning concentrates on assessing outcomes at the conclusion of a teaching session. Though they have different goals and take place at different stages of the teaching and learning process, both techniques are crucial to education.

Assessments of learners is likely to panic and anxiety in learners.
As there is comparative by teachers for student, as well as correction are done by others and not the teachers with a negative words for student to put down the moral of the student.

The strength is to use Assessments for learners in order to have more human resources for the economics growth , instead having more unachieved dreams and more drop outs.

Based on the video clip, assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety in learners.

When it comes to my assessment methods, I believe one of the main strengths is that I provide clear and specific instructions on what is expected from the learners. However, one of the main weaknesses could be that I tend to rely too much on traditional forms of assessment such as tests and quizzes.

To avoid or minimise bad feelings about assessment from developing in learners, I would consider offering multiple forms of assessment, such as project-based assessments or peer evaluations. Additionally, providing constructive feedback and focusing on progress rather than just grades could help alleviate anxiety and promote learning. Talking with a colleague virtually could help generate more ideas and strategies for creating a positive assessment experience for learners.

1.Assessment of learning is more likely to cause panic and anxiety in learners.
2.Main strengths of how I assess:

  • able to gage gaps and weak areas .This will in turn prompt remedial action to foster improvement.
Main weaknesses of how I assess:
  • with the current methods of assessments,a “one size fits all” approach is used, hence it does not efficiently cater to all learner’s needs.
  1. Assessment of learning
  2. Topic Test, Essay writing, short test, group presentation, summative tests.
    Strength
  • Makes students revise
  • Keeps students work up to date
  • Gives feedback on student’s level of understanding as concepts are being taught.
  • Assists students in improving
    Weakness
  • Students are not prepared to do test
  • Some students do not attempt essays
  • All students are not present on the day of assessment
  • Creates fear during summative exams
